Who We Are


Railway Mission is a Christian faith-based charity offering independent, confidential, impartial pastoral care to the railway community and members of the public affected by rail operations. Each of our regionally-based chaplains aims to be an impartial ‘friend’ for those who work on the railways. Regardless of faith, gender, or sexual orientation, our chaplains offer face-to-face year-round support, especially during an individual’s time of loneliness, stress, depression, bereavement or illness.

 

Many are experiencing family breakdown, mental ill-health, bereavement, financial difficulties, being victims of crime and much more. Rail staff approach a chaplain for support through these difficult times as a friend and colleague, rather than phone a stranger to receive counselling support to talk through personal difficulties. But railway chaplains have also supported railway staff and police in the aftermath of major incidents, such as train crashes or terror attacks.

This report outlines the essential chaplaincy support provided by the Railway Mission to 9,814 UK rail industry employees during 2024, highlighting key interventions like crisis response and emphasising the significant social value generated—£3.13 for every £1 received, totalling £1,848,851, promoting mental health, resilience, and workplace well-being.

How do we help?


At Railway Mission, our viaduct logo symbolises strength and support, just like the bridges that carry the railway. For over 130 years, we've been there for people on the railways. While our history runs deep, our support is firmly focused on today’s challenges.


We work across the whole rail industry, from train operators to infrastructure and the supply chain. Our chaplains support staff at every level and connect with passengers too, offering a listening ear and a steady presence.

Life can be tough, and we’re here when it is. Whether someone’s facing stress, grief, or just needs to talk, we offer face-to-face friendship and help to explore a way forward; no judgement, just support.


When serious incidents or fatalities happen, we respond quickly, offering calm, compassionate care. In difficult moments, we stand beside staff and the public, helping them feel heard, supported, and never alone.
